Staying motivated when building out your website or blog can be tough at times. Learning how to stay focused while working at home is essential to your success as without this focus and motivation, things can start to go downhill.
I have been there believe me. The first month I was in full swing and excited to be building something of my own, it was fresh and new and nothing was going to stop me. After a while though and two or three months in, I had little in the way of traction and visitors and I started wondering if all my effort was in vain.
Was it all worth it? Am I wasting my time here? You know what I am talking about here right?
I started to slack off, I lost my focus and motivation and started to struggle to write content and build out my website. When you are working from home this canbe a real killer. Remember, there is no boss to kick you in the butt and tell you to get on with it. You are the boss, and you need to keep yourself on top!
Are you in this position? Are you finding it hard to keep going as you feel you are not getting anywhere? If you feel that things are not moving the way you want them too, it can be easy to lose your drive! Here I will offer you the tips and advice I followed to ensure I continued to stay focused and productive while working on my home online business.
One Thing To Remember
Should you be feeling deflated and your motivation is lacking, then please take it from me it is quite a normal feeling to experience. Very often we can plunge ourselves into a project and when we understand it takes time and a little more effort, it can be somewhat annoying. Try losing weight and you will know what I mean!
When you do not see results as fast as you had hoped for it can knock the wind out of your sails can’t it?
Keep Your Dreams Alive
No matter what you are doing, be it building a website/blog or running a catalogue business etc, working from home is something you have chosen to do for a reason.
Maybe you want a second income to support yourself and your family? Maybe you want to save extra money for a holiday? Maybe you love helping other people and want to be supportive? Maybe your dream is to be your own boss and there is every chance you are hacked off working for someone else (I know I was).
My point here is, remember why you started working from home in the first place and keep that dream in the front of your mind.
Having something to work towards is a great way to keep you focused and motivated.
For me, I always wanted to live in Greece (and I do now). When i was feeling deflated though and lacking motivation, I put a photo of my favorite Greek beach next to my computer monitor so every morning when I came to sit and do some work, it inspired me.
Seeing the sun and the sand on the photo and people there enjoying themselves always gave me the kick in the ass I needed to be able to work towards having it, and I did it!
If you want something enough, you will get it.
Have A Schedule
I am an absolute advocate of having a schedule and sticking to it. Working randomly every day without really knowing what your achievements should be will lead you to going off course, wasting time and being unproductive.
Now, I know we all have personal lives and other things going on. There is every chance you have a family life, children, friends, your full time job and let’s not forget all the chores that fit into life too!! Car in for repair, shopping to be done, cooking to be fixed etc.
My point here is, you need to find an allotted time period and have a plan to do what you need to do within that time.
Try to allocate two or three hours per day (if possible) at a time that suits you best to work on your home business.
Write your content, do your social media, fix your accounts, do some training or a tuition package or learn some SEO. Whatever it is, do it and do not get distracted or sidetracked.
For example, if you need to write a piece of content for your blog, write it and do nothing else. Do not be talking to your friends on the phone, sending an SMS to someone, checking your social media accounts or watching a music video.
Me personally, I have a diary and I plan my month ahead. On each day I have tasks written down with what I need to achieve and I follow it to the letter. This way I am very productive, I meet my daily, weekly and montlhy goals and I make progress.
Without this plan and schedule in place, you will lose motivation and focus as you will be working haphazardly and not really knowing what your goals are.
Take Time To Learn
Always try to set aside time to learn something new about your business. For example, when I started working online, I gave myself a time frame of 30 minutes each day to learn something fresh which would enhance my skills. I spent time doing my Training Certification Courses step by step and each day I would incorporate what I had learned into my work.
It is important to feel a sense of achievement and knowledge is certainly power. The more you learn and the more you stick at it, the easier it all becomes and the better you will feel.
Once you are educated and you become more knowledgeable within your field, things will not seem so much of a chore anymore. Instead, they will become extremely enjoyable and your production levels will take a massive boost because of it.
Becoming an expert at what you are doing will lead to you getting attention and people will come to you for advice. This in turn will keep you motivated and focused on what you are doing and what you want to achieve in the long run.
Celebrate Your Goals
Having goals is important and these are something that can also be listed as part of your schedule. Once you achieve certain goals feel free to reward yourself.
If you are operating a business online, maybe you could set a goal to write 8 pieces of quality content during a month period. Work at it, and do it. Once done, you could treat yourself to a day off the next day and a glass of wine or a beer. It sounds silly, but offering yourself a little pat on the back for your hard work goes a long way. It gives you something to look forward to and to work towards.
I set myself monthly goals all the time. It involves me having to hit targets for content writing, social media activity, tuition and training and communicating with my readers. If I hit these targets at the end of the month, I use a small amount of my profits to go for a meal and a drink with some friends. It is a small gesture to myself, but it is something I look forward to and it gives me something to aim for!
Remember, “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”
Believe me, the more you work, the harder you try and the more you educate yourself, the easier it all becomes. I know from experience when you first start out that you have a lot on your mind and you will also have a lot of questions that need answering.
Initially you can often feel you are digging yourself into a hole and you are getting a little out of your depth.
Writing content is hard at first and understanding business building concepts and design can go over your head too. Yes, there will be times when you need help and guidance. Hey, this is OK, nobody is born an expert at anything and we all have to start somewhere right?
Have goals and targets so you can keep things in order, ask questions when you need help and be sure to follow a good training course and you will achieve. The only person to stop you – is you.
The training is there, the help is there and the opportunity is there. You just have to want it! As you progress, the easier it all becomes and from there it is all plain sailing. Trust me!
Like most things in life, success comes with effort. if you are not willing to put in the effort then you will not succeed. Do not get me wrong, it is fine to have days when you feel things are not working out. We all have them and nobody feels on top of the world every single day.
It is important to keep your long term vision at the forefront of your mind though. Set those goals, have your targets and aim for them. This will allow you to keep a nice organized flow in what you are doing and as a result you will be far less likely to feel swamped and unmotivated!
My Final Advice
It is always advisable to follow a set plan when setting up your own home business whether it be online or not. I see many people trying to tackle the online world with little or no knowledge of what it is they need to be doing.
Remember, nobody is born an expert and we all need to have a starting point.
